              Software, instructions that tell a computer what to do. Software comprises the entire set of programs, procedures, and routines associated with the operation of a computer system. The term was coined to differentiate these instructions from hardware such as the physical components of a computer system. A set of instructions that directs a computer’s hardware to perform a task is called a program, or software program.




 In 2000, Fred Shapiro, a librarian at the Yale Law School, published a letter revealing that John Wilder Tukey's 1958 paper "The Teaching of Concrete Mathematics" contained the earliest known usage of the term "software" found in a search of JSTOR's electronic archives, predating the OED's citation by two years. This led many to credit Tukey with coining the term, particularly in obituaries published that same year, although Tukey never claimed credit for any such coinage. In 1995, Paul Niquette claimed he had originally coined the term in October 1953, although he could not find any documents supporting his claim. The earliest known publication of the term "software" in an engineering context was in August 1953 by Richard R. Carhart, in a Rand Corporation Research Memorandum.

Software are created by programmers. John Carmack, Sid Meier, Tim Sweeney these are some greatest programmers.

  • System Software 
  • Application Software



Computer hardware is solely dependent on the system software to operate. System software is integrated within the computer when the operating system is installed. Typically, there is no need for the user to interact with the system software as it always works in the background. System software can run spontaneously on its own. It acts as a platform for running application softwares. For instance, the common system softwares are compiler, assembler, debugger, driver etc.

System Software 

Application software is employed by the user to perform specific tasks. The application softwares needed to be installed can vary from user to user according to their individual requirements. Basically, the user interacts with application softwares. Application software can’t run without the presence of system software. Word processing system, browser, media player, etc. are some of the examples of application software.

In addition, these days distant learning is on practice due to the convenience it offers to us. Recently, due to the corona virus (COVID 19) outbreak throughout the world, most public gatherings are restricted especially educational institutions. However, for the academic activities to prevail throughout this pandemic, the use of video conferencing softwares are essential. So for educational purpose, video conferencing softwares like skype, webex, zoom, telegram, blackboard are etc are the softwares are something which is a major requirement.
